The Korean ECM constructions are accounted for in terms of Raising to Object (RTO) in this paper. First, I propose that Korean ECM constructions are not actually ECMed but raised to the matrix Spec of VP by raising to object (RTO) (Postal 1974 and Lasnik and Saito 1991). Data related with Binding Condition A and B, passivization, sentential adverb placement, floated quantifiers, NPI, scope, scrambling, cleft constructions, and others are provided to support the claim that the complement subject is actually raised. Second, I propose that raising of the complement subject to the matrix clause is not optional as argued in Yang (2003) but obligatory. Third, adopting Miyagawa (2005) and Chomsky (2005, 2006), I propose that the V-focus feature inherited from the phase head v makes RTO possible, providing both accusative Case checking and focus reading at the matrix V. Forth, it is claimed that the Spec of CP is analyzed as an A-position by the manner the position is derived following Chomsky (2005).
