As a rule, free tenure was 1.5 times as large as servile tenure in the classic manors during the Carolingian age. The ratio of total tenure area to that of lord's demesne was below 4 to 1. The ratios were distributed between 1.1 and 3.0 to 1 in most of classic manors, and especially tended to concentrate between 1.5 and 3.0. In this limit, the higher the ratio of total tenure area to lord's demesne was, the higher the proportion of free tenure was. On the contrary, the lower the areal ratio, the lower the proportion of free tenure. The manors where the areal ratio was unusually 4 to 1 were those where the number and size of free tenure was excessively expanded mainly by land clearing. On the other hand, the manors where the areal ratio was below 1.0 to 1 were those where the area of lord's demesne was more expanded than the area of peasant's holdings mainly by land receipt or clearing.
We can grasp the followings from this gist:
First, the fact that free tenure was roughly 1.5 times as large as servile tenure in the classic manors means that there was already the considerable gulf between rich and poor among peasants.
Second, the space structure that the ratios of total tenure area to that of lord's demesne were distributed between 1.1 and 3.0 to 1 in most of classic manors shows that the system of classic manor was a form of transitional landownership between ancient Roman latifundium where there was only lord's demesne cultivated principally by servile labor force and the system of pure manor where there was in fact only peasant's tenures without demesne.
Third, There was a very close connection between the size by classification of tenure and the size of lord's demesne under the system of classic manor.
