This article's purpose is to reveal the formation of modern free verse and the formative process of 1920s' poetic rhythm.
The formation of modern free verse in Korea was related to the acceptance of French symbolism in the late 1910s. The needs of the times to express a personal thoughts and feelings calls for a new form as such a free verse necessarily. The modern free verse denies the rhythm as a metre. Hence what should really be counted is to grasp non-meteric factors in free verses. The term, 'innate rhythm' illustrates a phenomenon that the rhythm as a metre changed into the rhythm as a free non-meter. The term, 'innate rhythm' includes both 'nae-sim yul' existing in poets and 'nae-young yul' existing in poems. The former is related to poet's breath-theory, and the latter is related to poetic language in itself.
But this process was influenced by the foundation of KAPF and the opposition of the national literature faction in mid-1920's. Specially the folk-poetry and the revival movement of 'Sijo' brought the concept of 'nation' and 'tradition' to poetry. As a result they produced a strict dichotomy between foreign culture and traditional culture, and content and form. And this means that the rules of metre are upgraded to poetry's essential, melodious and formal levels. At last The thesis 'musicality=form=external rhythm=metre=pure-syllabic metre' was established. This thesis is still functioning as the standard model of poetic rhythm.
In the end we can see that the differential understandings of poetic rhythm determine not only the destiny of modern free verse but also our attitude towards the concept of poetry.
