This paper explains the possibilities and the necessities of adopting a 'special economic zone' ('SEZ' hereafter) in Daegu city, South Korea. We will also examine the effects of the SEZ that could possibly lead to the economic growth of the city, based on other examples of test citites.
These city examples include the current economic developments of Shanghai, Shenchuan, Hongkong China and Singapore as a result of adopting SEZs. Secondly, geographic conditions, physical distribution conditions, specific industrial conditions and regional economic environments of Daegu city according to the SEZ adoption will be examined. Finally, the paper will evaluate the visible efforts of Daegu city municipal government to induce several economic and trade related reforms including not only SEZ, but also free trade zones for the purpose of regional economic growth and balanced economic development of the country.
