This article takes up deterritorialization of culture as a current issue of Korean studies, and attempts to search for ways to deal with the deterritorialization of Korean culture in an anthropological perspective. It starts with the question of whether Korean culture is deterritorialized. To answer this question, first the social discourse of "one nation, one people" which makes Korean culture univocal is discussed. And the way in which Korean culture has been conceptualized and analyzed in Korean anthropology and Korean studies is also examined. In its social discourse and academic production, Korean culture has been considered as an unique, concrete entity of value system shared by Koreans in Korean peninsula. This, in fact, should be understood as ideological manifestations rather than the current state of Korean culture.
To deal with the deterritorailizing Korean culture, the anthropological discussions about field work and the theoretical discussions of postmodern anthropologists is explored. In American anthropology, field work, the traditional research method of anthropology, has become problematic as the distance between the field and home has been reduced and the cultural boundary between the field and home has become blurred in the process of globalization. Diasporal, postcolonial, and native anthropologists are asserting the reconceptualization of the field and the field work method.
Some of American postmodern anthropologists have also noticed the current state of cultures, and have sought the ways to deal with new cultural sites, such as public culture, interstitial zones and borderlands. They have tried to deconstruct the way in which anthropologists have produced the knowledge of cultures and redefine the relationship between anthropologists and natives. As one of their endeavors, multi-sited ethnography has been proposed to cope with the mobile state of people, symbols, stories, etc..
From the discussion above, it seems necessary to redefine the field in the study of Korean culture by looking at the borderlands created by the place-making of foreign laborers, North Koreans and others. It is also urgent to reinvent the methods to cope with new subject matters in the study of Korean culture. Especially, field work method needs to be revised depending on the new cultural sites. Lastly, it seems appropriate to clarify the anthropological production of knowledge about Korean culture, especially for native anthropologists and Koreanists since studying our own culture also involves power-knowledge system.
