This thesis carefully and systematically studied and analyzed thedevelopment (up to present day) and the outlook of Taiwanese literature. Taiwan had experienced nearly four hundreds of years of foreign occupation in her history. From the time of Dutch colonies, through the Myung-jung(明鄭) and Maan-chung(滿淸) era, to Japanese occupation, the island was under the foreign rules several times. Ironically, however, this experience made it possible for Taiwan to incorporatediverse foreign cultures into her own culture and shape unique Taiwanese literature.
This thesis attempts to predict what the future holds for Taiwanese literature will be by studying mainly on the Taiwanese literature from the time of Japanese colonial rule. This thesis consists of three chapters: Chapter 1 tries to define what Taiwanese literature is and provide the overall insight of Taiwanese literature. Chapter 2 looks into the development of Taiwanese literature in two separate eras: 'Pre-WWII (Pacific War) Era (1920~1945)' and 'Post-WWII (Pacific War) Era (1945~ Present).' Chapter 3 is of the prospect of Taiwanese literature.
During those hundreds of years from the colonial occupations to the lifting of marshal law in 1987, Taiwanese literature had experienced remarkable growth. Though Taiwan had been influenced by the other cultures, it did not lose the originality of its own culture. The 400 years of Taiwanese history, the history of oppression under the foreign rulers, caused the early works of Taiwanese literature to be full of sorrow and tears, and of outrage and resistance. After the democratization of Taiwanese society and when the people are enjoying more freedom, literature too begins to enjoy more freedom, and ultimately is on the right track.
The conclusion of this thesis sought to see the originality of Taiwanese literature and the future. What they need most is that they have to set up goals to share. In the community of Taiwanese people, the common goals mean thereestablishment of sense of identity. It seems that the reestablishment of present Taiwan's soul through the cool criticism and analysis of the reality has very special meaning.
Taiwanese literature is very independent and unique-not of another branch of someone else's culture but of the people on that island who have created it. Therefore, it does not go too far to call Taiwanese literature a part of World's literature.
