This paper is to survey the functional change of Shanghai Confucian Temple from modern to contemporary times. Through this survey, I aim to clarify the relationship between state power and' (Confucian) tradition'.
After the middle of 1990s, Shanghai Confucian Temple is repaired by the government authorities in large scale. At first sight, this situation seems to show that the authority is taking a serious view of traditional cultural heritage. But I think the repair project of Shanghai Confucian Temple was not simply a policy to restore and preserve cultural heritage. As we can see from the fact that the authority gave Shanghai Confucian Temple the function of Patriotic Educational Base, I think that the project seems to be closely related to the strategy to promote patriotic education in the whole country. Needless to say, the promotion of patriotic education is a part of the project that is to build the so-called "China's characteristic socialism".
In fact, Nanjing Government also had used Shanghai Confucian Temple as the base to hold the Commemorative Event of Confucian Birthday after mid-1930s in Republican Era. At that time, through that event they had intended to secure the unification of the nation and to establish nation-state in their own way.
By the way. judging from the original function of Confucian Temple, the use of Shanghai Confucian Temple by the authority will be natural. Because, as it is well-known, the major reason for the establishment of the Confucian Temple by the dynasties of many generations was to systematize cultural legitimacy of Confucianism and to strengthen legitimacy of their ruling. Accordingly, both Nanjing Government in the Republican Era and the contemporary government authority made use of the Confucian Temple's traditional function in relation to the achievement of the task for each of their times.
