In 1993, a tomb of the Warring States period(475-221 BC) was excavated at Guodian - near Jingmen, Hubei province. That is to say, a Large numbers of bamboo slips were unearthed from a Chu tomb at a village called of Guodian in that Gity. The bamboo slips are Confucianist and Taoist classics in a previously unknown form In 1998, they were formally published together with annotations(『郭店楚墓竹簡』).
It is a matter of paramount importance to the circle of Humanities in China and the field of Chinese studies around the world. The moment these long-lost classics were published, they immediately caused international academic circles to give their full attention to them and there has been a flourish of research on them, thus they have become a focus in the Humanities around the world.
The list of these bamboo slips divide into twelve classes. Namely, Lao Zi Ⅰ,Ⅱ, and Ⅲ, The Great One Gave to Water, Black Robes, Duke Mu of Lu asked Zi Si, Success depend on Living at the Right Time, The Five Ways of Conduct, the Ways of Yao and Shun, The Ways of Royalty and Sincerity, Cheng Zhi Once Heard it Said, Venerate Virtue and Righteousness, Human Nature Emerges from Fate, The Six Virtues, Collected Sayings Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ. (『老子』: 甲, 乙, 丙子, 『太一生水』, 『緇衣』, 『魯穆公問子思』, 『窮達以時』, 『五行』, 『唐虞之道』, 『忠信之道』, 『成之問之』, 『尊德義』, 『性自命出』, 『六德』, 『語叢:一, 二, 三, 四』)
This is because the publication of these materials does, in a certain sense, provide academic circles with new materials and chances for further research. By using these materials many scholars may rewrite the intellectual history of pre-Chin times and the cultural history of the am State, and thus help solve many academic questions. And we fundamentally can change pre-conceived ideas more profoundly than since the first generation of Chinese Scholars in Korean Academy. Therefore we must fully research on Chu Bamboo Slips in Translation with notes before we discuss and tackle these texts.
