This paper aims at studying the aspects and meaning of urban life in late Chosun(朝鮮) in classical poetry. Thanks to the development of commercial business and the circulation of metallic currency, some regions began to show the characters of city. Especially Seoul grew into a big city as the population concentrated. With the development of currency-economy the rich-get-richer and the poor-get-poor, various urban problem arose. The aspects of urban life in classical poetry are as follows.
The first, with the development of commercial business interest in the material world was expressed. Many kinds of things in daily life was used as a writing material. The second, as the currency-economy settled down people began to recognize that management of property was an important issue. A private banking business was often used for making money. The third, urban entertainment was widespread and new urban spaces appeared. Like a peddler’s inn or a prostitute bar food service spots or entertainment places began to appear.
Some texts shows that of course people needed money to make a living but they should make money by fair means. To put it the other way, at that time active pursuit of profit was diffused throughout the city, most people were shaken by that change. The rapid growth of the city made various urban aspects, people remembered human worth in literary works.
