A quick review of the historical references to Korean folklore studies and 'Korean Folklore Society' as its scholarly community reveals the dominant presence of a simple dualism based on the researchers' national backgrounds. It has been generally believed, in other words, that Japanese scholars' study on Korean folklore was an assimilation discourse that contributed to colonialism while its Korean counterpart was a nativist discourse rooted in nationalism. According to this prevailing theory, the two different research subjects with the opposing values of domination and resistance were sustaining a "risky cohabitation" under the same roof of 'Korean Folklore Society'.
Was it really the case, especially with the ideological topography and dynamics of Korean folklore studies? To resolve this problem, this paper reconstructs the historical situation before the establishment of 'Korean Folklore Society' with its main focus on Sohn Jin-tae, Song Seok-ha, and Akiba Takasi, all of whom were the high-profile figures in the 'Korean Folklore Society'. This paper also sheds light on the reality of "cohabitation" by investigating the Society's founding process and activities. And then it examines Korean folklore studies under the total-war system in the last years of Japanese imperialism and its relationship with colonialism. My paper finally suggests that the "cohabitation" of both parties was not so "dangerous" as it might have been when considered in terms of their philosophical orientation as well as their personal relationship, and that they were actually involved with colonialism in a direct or indirect manner.
