In this paper, I reviewed general perspective and category of East Asian astronomy. I introduced a problem of astronomical category here, because I thought traditional East Asian astronomy could not be only analyzed into methodology of modem astronomy, but also needed perspective of history and the humanities.
Modern astronomy focuses on the celestial materials separated from the humanities, on the other side traditional society pursues all the humanities, politics and sociology together in addition to astronomical aspect.
I analyzed the category of traditional astronomy of East Asian into five aspects as below. Firstly, I suggested astronomical constellation field about stars or traditional constellations, including "Three Fences and Twenty-eight Houses", those are kinds of the oriental system of constellations, meaning three major celestial fields and equatorial twenty-eight constellations.
The second is the astronomical field of calendar system. This aspect contains the most accurate scientic facts. Thirdly, I suggested astronomical cosmology field. It is about I-Ching, the main text for studying East Asian cosmology. During ancient China of Chin and Haan dynasty periods, they had made efforts to relate astronomical theory with the I-Ching theory.
The fourth is the field of astronomical interpretation on the basis of astronomical and meteorological phenomena, it can be called "Sangseo-Jaeihak". Ancient people consider astronomical phenomena sum as solar or lunar eclipse as political bad omen to the King and Emperor or their nations and states. They thought those phenomena were not natural phenomena but the Heaven's reprimand to the human being.
The last aspect is the field of astronomical sociology or culture. This includes all the social, cultural, theoretical and institutional aspects affected by East Asian astronomy. We might say it is the history in general of astronomical aspects.
