The objective of this article is to explicate the historical and philosophical contexts of Korean thoughts in which Kim Pu-Sik wrote Samguk-sagi(The Chronicled History of Three Kingdoms), the kinds of Confucianist ideas that Kim Pu-Sik adopted at the time for his book, and the significance of his book in the history of Confucianism in Korea.
As Kim In-jon’s Chongyonkak-gi and other books attests, the philosophical trend of the time avoided the former tendency of reading classical and literary texts. In addition, with the import from North Sung(北宋) of Neo-Confucianism(Learning of Nature and Principles) that emphasizes nature s principles and humanity, a new current of philosophy was forming among the upper-class literati and the ruling class.
A close look at Samguk-sagi reveals that the most frequently used concepts in it are humanity(仁) and righteousness(義), rather than fealty to the nation(忠) and filial duty(孝), and that there is a particular priority placed upon humanity among them. For the philosophical backbone of Kim Pu-sik's politics was humane governance(仁政), we realize that the main focus of Confucianism that Samguk-sagi promotes was humane governance that has virtuous politics(德治) for its basis.
The significance of Samguk-sagi in the history of Korean Confucianism lies in that fact that in the middle period of Koryo Dynasty it transcended the classical and literary readings of the time based on its comprehension of Neo-Confucianism of North Sung, and therefore laid the foundation that facilitated the transition to the more sophisticated ideas of ethics and politics in Chu Hui’s(朱熹) Neo-Confucianism in late Koryo.
