It has been over four years since the Six Party Talks began on August 27, 2003. Since then there have been several rounds of talks between the participating states. Little progress was achieved until the fifth round of talks, when, in a statement adopted on February 13 2007, North Korea agreed to shut down nuclear facilities in exchange for fuel aid. Although the agreement was criticized by American conservatives, and American liberals continue to fault Bush for refusing to meet with Kim Jong Il, the range of American opinion in regard to North Korea is not as wide as South Koreans think. What is more, the American mainstream left (the Democratic Party) is generally more anti-Pyongyang than South Korea’s mainstream right (the GNP). The paper aims to show that the Six Party Talks are likely to run into serious difficulties in the next few months, that America will attribute some blame for these difficulties to South Korea's soft-line policy towards Pyongyang and that the US-ROK alliance will continue to deteriorate regardless of who moves into the Blue House and the White House.
