Gwangju, which had been named Geojin in early Chosun, was an eup belonging to Yongjin, in which a headquarter was founded in order to block the Japanese troops from moving up to Seoul through Hangang during Imjinwaeran ‘the Imjin War against Japan.’ But it recovered its right of military command after the war. Later in 1626 the local government of Gwangju was moved to Nam Han San Seong, in which the local governor also held the post of the defending commander. From Jeongmyohoran ‘the Jeongmyo War against Ching’ to Byeongjahoran ‘the Byeogja War against Ching,’ it underwent a change of its military command system in that a Yeongjang ‘commander’ was sent to Gwangju, and then exercised the military command in place of the local governor. Though the governor’s right of military command was recovered as Gyeomeyongjangje was enacted after the Byeongja War, the number of eupsbelonging to Gwangju was reduced as Chongyungcheong, Sueocheong, and Jinmuyeong were founded since the days of King Injo, In 1663, the local governor of Gwangju became to additionally hold the post of Toposa, but Cwangju’s Topo eups did not correspond to its Jinyeong eups.
On the other hand, since the days of King Sukjong, Gwangjuyusubuje repeatedly had underwent changes like Gwangju Yusu’s additional appointment as Sueosa and independent appointment of Sueosa, with regard to reducing the state’s financial burden and Gyeonggi people’s difficulties as well as strengthening the outer defense of the Capital. Later in 1795, when Gwangjuyusubuje was established, by which Gwangju was promoted to a Yusubu, and the Yusu became to additionally hold the post of Namhansueosa, the system of 4 Do Yusubuje was put in order.
