The Korean graduates of the Teikoku Art School(帝國美術學校) played an important role in Korea′s modem art history, Teikoku Art School graduates such as Kim Hak Jun(金學俊), Kim Won(金源) and Lee Kwae Dae(李快大) had earlier founded the ‘Joseonhakuhoe(朝鮮學友會)’, which became the basis for the ‘’Baekwuhoe(白牛會)’ founded in 1933. From 1938 until 1943 for six times the Baekwuhoe sponsored the Tokyo Art Association Exhibition in Seoul, which provided an opportunity for their paintings to be exhibited.
This paper deals with Teikoku Art School graduates′s the Baekwuhoe Art Exhibitions and their efforts in organizing it.
Following liberation from japanese rule in 1945 the graduates of Teikoku Art School scattered. In order to continue the spirit and purpose of the original Baekwuhoe, in 1955 a new organization was formed. This time the meaning of the name was changed from ‘Baekwuhoe(白牛會)’ to ‘Baekwuhoe(白友會).’ the Baekwuhoe Art Exhibitions, which drew attention from the larger artistic community in Korea, were designed to both strengthen ties among the alumni and contributed to the development of Korean art.
Although they have not been the subject of much research, under the auspices of the new Baekwuhoe(白友會) there were held eight Baekwuhoe Art Exhibitions from 1955 until 1965. The exhibition were all inclusive and did not impose any restriction on entries. Thus a variety of works from different genres were displayed and the creativity and diversity seen there were two of the positive aspects of the exhibition.
In light of the indifference prevailing in the art world in the l950s the Baekwuhoe Art Exhibitions were significant. It was the only art exhibition series founded by the graduates of one particular art school in Japan and was at least as important as the series of six exhibition held under the name of the Tokyo Art Exhibition held before the end of Japanese rule.
