The rate of divorce of Korean middle-aged women continues to rise at a rapid rate, outstripping the rate of divorce of Korean women in other agegroups. The purpose of this study is to explore how these women adjust to post-divorce life within a society of rapidly changing views and systems. Reviewing Role Theory and Self-in Relation theory, theoretical framework is composed of adjustment as self-identity and coping to divorce crisis. Through qualitative research, this study attempted to reveal Korean women’s perceptions, definitions, and evaluations of their adjustment after divorce within the context of their lives. Thirteen Korean between the ages of 35 to 51 participated in an at least 180 minute semi structured qualitative interviews. Analyzing narrative data in terms of subjects’ process of development through the different stages of post-divorce adjustment, the author comprised the divorce adjustment typology of the Adjusters, the Transitioners, and the Impoverished.
This adjustment model in terms of self-identity and coping has applicability for those who have observed conflict between social values and the women themselves.
