External brood mite, Varroa destructor devastated Apis mellifera based beekeeping industry in north India since 2004. Employment of chemical control methods has not only resulted in mixed results but also added to the problems of pesticide residues, development of resistance, in addition to putting an enormous economic burden on the beekeepers. Among the biotechnical methods of Varroa control, employment of mesh bottom board hold great promise, many designs of them are in practice. Their cost ranges upto Rs. 300 per hive but they can not be used as such in hives used in India for A. mellifera. A new “Chaudhary’s Mesh Floor Board Frame Insert” (CMFBFI) was devised that not only overcome these problems but is a cheaper and effective alternate. It consists of a rectangular frame made from 7mm thick square iron rods welded together, measuring 17×14 1/2 inches (43×35 1/2cm). A cut piece of wire mesh 8 to 12 size measuring 18×15 1/2 inches (45.5×38cm) is placed on the iron frame and pressed with hand along the edges and further folded down to fit it firmly. Tie two pieces of cut wire along the breadth away from entrance to act as grips to lift the frame from the hive. Insert is placed on the bottom board either by sliding through the hive entrance or placed after removing the brood chamber. Even after placing frame insert, there is a distance of about 8mm between sticker sheet and the wire mesh and a further space of upto 17 mm between the wire mesh and bottom frame of the combs, enough for the honeybees to perform their normal hive duties. This insert also works perfectly in bee hives used in Asian and Indian subcontinent (¤99%) where bottom board and brood chamber is nailed together. This insert is placed on bottom board after removing the combs. In such hives, mesh bottom boards can not work. A further option improves its efficacy further. The side of the wire mesh facing hive entrance can be singly folded to act like a bridge, making entry or exit of the foragers smoother. This insert can be used both as a Varroa detection tool as well as control tool for varroa management strategies. The unit price of this new frame insert is Indian Rs. 30 (US$ 0.72) only and can be easily made by the beekeepers themselves.
