This thesis is aimed to explain what makes women vulnerable to violence and to explore the meanings of revealing moral agency of victimized women from the perspective of battered women. Women’s vulnerability to violence is rooted in the various social relations, such as social control over women, genderly unequal legal system and familial norms. The group of women are socialized and represented as helpless, powerless, and passive victims. The widespread stereotype of victimized women and the victim-blaming discourse reflect the ways that the society treats them. Battered wives are accused of not leaving their abusers. Their struggle to solve problems is hardly recognized in those. Even, in most of feminist discourses, victimized women are regarded as objects of consciousness-raising or empowerment, not as moral agents. Thereby women are not seen as the agents who are able to resist the dominant norms, their experiences are underestimated and prejudices against women are reinforced. This study is to raise the problems in anti-violence women’s movements and feminist discourses in Korea.
I interviewed 8 victimized women who have ever stayed in a domestic violence shelter. Some of them are now preparing for divorce and the others already divorced. Battered wives are expected to be responsible for all the familial matters including domestic violence. In a patriarchal family, a husband takes it for granted to depend on his wife for daily needs. Battered wives accept excessive dependency and stay in the relationships. They take it as ‘love’ or ‘caring’ and feel responsibility for their husbands, so-called ‘weakers’. Women are vulnerable to the violence as well. and it has the social context. Battered wives make an effort to understand their husbands and look forward to correcting husbands for themselves. The women stay home and never ignore their ’duties’ despite the violence. They also believe that a husband and a wife should trust in and devote mutually and appreciate the value of caring itself. Moral consciousness is one of the most convincing factors which makes women exposed to domestic violence. Women are asked to abide by social rules and perform their roles. They internalize the prevailing ideas that blame the victimized and make them extremely powerless. The feeling of shame, guilt, and self-blame has the profound effect on the victims. Women’s moral consciousness and their observance to the moral principle consist of women’s vulnerability. However victimized women who have left their partner came to have different perspectives on their former relationship and morality they used to have. This study never fails to see the ‘vulnerability’ of women’s experiences but does not undermine nor deny it. It also takes an attempt to examine how the women’s agency is composed of and practiced. To research the experience of Battered women, furthermore, is quite meaningful in exploring women’s moral agency.
