This study is to review the using conditions of CATs, perception, effects, and satisfaction with CATs in female cancer patients. The subjects of this study are female cancer patients who had been diagnosed as cancer and treated with surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy at “A” hospital in Seoul. The collected data (173 copies of a questionnaire returned) were analyzed the frequencies, percentages, t-test, Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, and logistic regression analysis using SPSS program.
45.7% of the patients had ever used CAT, favoring dietary and nutritional therapies and herb therapies most. The main motive for using CAT was treatment of cancer, and the majority of the patients came to use CAT in an effort to find every possible treatment of their cancer(63.3%). The primary sources of information about CAT were family, relatives, friends(87.3%), mass media(52.6%) and other patients(44.5%). There were found no significant differences of CATs being used depending on such demographic variables as sex, age, marital status, religion, academic background and address, uses of CATs were positively correlated with the income level. However, there was found some significant difference of CATs being used depending on how long they had suffered from cancer(p=0.005) or whether they had experienced a distant metastasis or recurrence(p=0.012). There was found some significant difference of CATs being used depending on perception scale(0-44) about CATs(p=0.000).
In conclusion, female cancer patients are concerned about diverse CATs during their treatment and use them in the hope that their health may be maintained or their cancer be treated. Therefore, our nurses are obliged to have an open dialogue with patients, being aware of CATs, and thereby, educate and counsel them about CATs not to allow them to use CATs in a vague hope, and furthermore, develop and perform some independent nursing interventions.
