To improve laboratory animal science in Korea, we surveyed the current status of health and genetic monitoring, and the direction of the national policy from facility supervisors of 51 organizations. Also, to analyze the level of humane care and use of laboratory animals in Korea, we examined the current status of laboratory animal welfare from 140 laboratory animal researchers of 52 organizations. Approximately 31% of the organizations surveyed conducted animal experiments without health monitoring, and most (90%) of these organizations conducted animal experiments without genetic monitoring. One of the specifications of the national policy was to supply and preserve genetically engineered mutant (GEM) animals. Most (96%) of the laboratory animal researchers are aware of the 3Rs (refinement, reduction and replacement), but 62% of the researchers experienced difficulty in using replacements during animal studies. Adequate education programs on the 3Rs, and financial support for GEM animals and health monitoring are necessary to develop and promote ethical and high quality laboratory animal science. These data can be used to determine the direction of the national policy in Korea.
