Advances in mobile communication technology are rapidly transforming the development of mobile libraries, changing the way they provide access to knowledge for users in remote and urban regions, and changing the way the human population gains knowledge and enriches communication networks locally and beyond. This project highlights the impact of mobile communication on mobile library developments globally from the 1990s to the present time. Since knowledge is socially constructed and distributed in relation to the role of various communication systems, the library works as an essential communication system by making available public knowledge and information to the public for the benefits of society. In this way, the library serves as an essential part of what Habermas defines as the public sphere; it contributes to fostering public life and civic culture, and serves for democracy in a society by providing an open communicative space for sharing knowledge. Interdisciplinary approaches are taken by combining perspectives from communication & media studies with library & information science views to explore new patterns of library service - mobile library services - with a focus on the influence of mobile communication technologies on knowledge distribution around the world.
