Mobile telephony, as a technology, has lent itself to varied uses. Mobile phones have been receiving constant reinvigoration and have advanced to a level where their technological features are ahead of audience demand. From being synonymous with voice calls and SMS, these gadgets, now, have impressive features built into them such as MP3, Camera, FM, MMS, GPRS, WAP-enabled phones, and Bluetooth technology. In brief, mobile phones can, at best, be described as a stripped-down version of the Internet.
As the Internet finds its new expression in the form of e-learning, social scientists and instructional technology researchers are attempting to identify the applicability of mobile phones in educational domains. As most of the Internet features are ingrained in mobile phones, it is only legitimate to take initiatives in the direction of exploring if mobile phones could be used as an effective supplementary tool to facilitate learning. Although extensive studies have not been undertaken in this sphere, efforts are on to examine how a technology that was primarily designed for making calls could be extended for informal learning. This study reviews the scope of SMS texting as furtherance to conventional learning.
