For the purpose of meeting the increasing demands of air traffic and keeping air traffic safety. ENRI (Electronic Navigation Research Institute) is studying the improvement of conflict detection methods in RDP (Radar Data Processing System). It is expected to enable the more precise predictions of aircraft positions and the more reliable detections of potential aircraft proximities. In order to define and categorize unnecessary conflict alert for the evaluation of improvement. we analyzed the occurrences of conflict alert by the simulation with CDES (Conflict Detection Evaluation System). As a result. the occurrences of conflict alert were closely related with vertical velocity in the climbing and descending phases. This was possibly connected with that intermittent alerts, which had some short durations and intervals, were occurred frequently. In conclusion. we demonstrated unnecessary conflict alert occurred when the pair of aircraft had a large altitude difference. This was why vertical maneuver was rarely observed in that condition. Unnecessary conflict alert should be considered to suppress. Additionally, we will be able to suppress it more precisely by the detection of vertical flight phases as climbing, descending or cruising.
