Flight distance is one of the indices for measuring the efficiency of Air Traffic Management (ATM). Flight tracks for major city pairs from Tokyo Haneda airport were extracted from operational radar data of Air Traffic Control (ATC). The distances between observed points were accumulated to measure the total flight distance from the departure airport to the destination airport. The distance was divided into climb, cruise, and descent phases for detailed analysis. For comparison with European measurement. en-route distance was calculated. As the results show, flight distance indicates characteristics of airspace configuration between city pairs, as well as airspace near airport. Effect of descent phase on total distance is greater than that of climb or cruise phases. The landing runway affects flight distance in descent phase of several airports with seasonal variation.
