The resilience and adaptability of Igbo culture to Western influence was amply demonstrated during the last century following the British conquest of Nigeria and the attendant invasion of Western culture. In its various facets, Igbo culture has been able to reasonably adapt to Western impositions, except in regard to women participation in the political process and governance. Indeed, Igbo women's political status may have retrogressed and their capacity to "sitting on a man" considerably whittled down. Thus, while the women have achieved reasonable progress' In the areas of economy, education, choice of marriage partners and widowhood, for instance, thanks to the United Nations Decade for Women and the Beijing Conference, they have hardly made any headway in the arena of politics and governance. The tradition persists that 'women do not sit with men to discuss the affairs of state'. This paper will examine the political status of women in contemporary Igboland and analyse the hurdles to their meaningful participation in governance. It will be argued that culture has been an impediment to their visibility in politics and governance.
