This paper discusses some of the issues emerging from the turn towards legislation within the contemporary women's movement in India. In order to contextualize the debate on legislative initiatives, the paper begins by tracking the earlier phases of the women's movement. It also elaborates on the manner in which everyday life struggles of women were politicized in each phase. The essay then goes on to focus on a specific legislative initiative the Bill on Domestic Violence Against Women (Prevention), 1999 proposed by the group called Women's Rights Initiative. A critical evaluation of different aspects of this Bill is made, keeping in mind the complex realities of women's lives.
