Women and girls the world over negotiate their lives within the interlocking nature of advantages and hardships shaped by gender, race, class, sexuality, and nationality. The women's movement, often in coalition with other justice movements, has addressed many issues of inequality, prejudice, stereotypes, violence and cruelty which impact the lives of women and girls. An overview of issues such as childhood socialization, education, violence against women, health and medical issues, reproductive rights, financial security and political representation and power display the progress made by women's movements in the lives of girls and women as well as continued barriers and backlashes to women's rights. The strength of the women's movement, it is argued, can be seen in issues which no longer are accepted as givens in life but are now contested. These ideas and issues push the world to address how women's rights are also human rights.
