This paper, based on a sample study of about 200 women respondents belonging to Thottianayakar community in Karur district of Tamil Nadu State (South India) attempts to measure the extent of child marriage practice among this group and also analyses its impact on the status of women. Though child marriage is a multidimensional issue, the main reason for its persistence among this community is to safeguard the kinfolk. The study reveals that a majority of marriages take place before the stipulated marriage age and the incidence of child marriage is more pronounced among girls than among boys and is largely practiced by families that are subject to chronic poverty. Child marriage perpetuates poverty and vice versa. The statistics relating to the women in the sample highlights that nearly 89 percent of the households are below poverty line; about 87 percent of women are illiterate; land and livestock are the only livelihood options; the incidence of female headed households is as high as 15 percent and infant mortality is to the extent of 20 percent reveal the adverse effect of child marriage on women. Further this undesirable practice nourishes the intergenerational cycle of poverty, illiteracy, poor health etc. as daughters of child brides themselves are often married as children. Hence elimination of child marriage practice should be accorded priority in the national agenda of child and women’s development.
