The purpose of this study is to explore residents' preference against the exterior design for avoiding from the simplicity and uniformity in extant multi-family attached houses. Particularly, it is focused on the mass shape, pathway and balcony type which are major residential-building design elements in apartment complex. For this study, 589 samples were selected in 6 districts of Busan metropolitan city and the multinomial logit model is employed as the empirical analysis for residents' preference. The major results of this analysis are as follows; The respondent characteristics such as gender, age and housing characteristics such as tenure status, housing unit size, mass type of current residential-building played more significant role in preferring to tower mass. And in respondent consciousness, the variables to denote the effects of the exterior design in determining apartment purchase and the evaluations about current residential-building forms were more likely to be associated with tower mass preference. It is also found that female and the older preferred stair type rather than corridor type. It was revealed that the probabilities to prefer round or prominent balcony are even higher than flat balcony in the variables to denote age, income, scale of apartment complex, direction, balcony type of current residential-building.
These findings are likely to provide the architects and planners concerning the urban landscape and residential design with more reliable informations.
