SBS, the new commercial channel entered television network market in 1991 and economic crisis broke in 1997. The changed broadcasting and economic environments have affected the level of network competitions. Thus this study examined how the network competitions have been changed during 1990 to 1999 period. In other words, the study focused on the analysis of programs which were changed in 4 network schedules.
The research questions are: 1) how the scale and the frequencies of the rescheduled programs have been changed since 1990; 2) what the aspects of rescheduled programs(cancelled, new, and time-shifted) have been occurred since 1990; 3) what the ratio of program types been differed for 10 years.
In order to solve the problems all the rescheduled programs of four channels were analyzed from 1990 to 1999. The rescheduled programs were classified into three categories: cancelled, new, and time-shifted programs. The total of analyzed programs were 6238 cases. Among those cases, there were 2027 cancelled programs, 2086 new programs, and 2125 time-shifted programs.
The result indicated that the limited competitions among KBS1, KBS2, and MBC were maintained by rescheduling twice in a year as well as keeping about 130 programs being changed before the entrance of SBS. However, severe competition was instigated after 1992. The severe competition was started as KBS2 responding to SBS programs. KBS2 expanded reschedule frequencies and scale immediately. Those competition continued ever since even in the economic crisis.
The ratio of the new, cancelled, and time-shifted programs was very similar. But the ratio of time-shifted programs was about 1-2% more than that of new and cancelled programs for the last 10 years. However, the pattern had been changed since 1990. All the networks tended to increase the ratio of new and cancelled programs while decreasing the ratio of time-shifted programs over the years. It means that the competition among networks had been much severed after the entrance of SBS.
Lastly, the ratio of reporting, education, and entertainment programs analysis indicated that the entertainment program was 57.4%, the education programs 29.7%, and the reporting programs 12.9% among all the rescheduled programs. It means that the competitive program type was entertainment programs. However, KBS1 exceptionally focused on education programs.
Overall, the entrance of SBS instigated the rating competition and the competition was not ceased although various groups gave pressure on the networks. Especially, the prime time competition among networks were more severe comparing with the other time zone. When SBS entered the network market, the rating competition had been severe than ever. All the networks changed entertainment programs very frequently even in the period of economic crisis.
