This study intends to find out the activities and characteristics of the Gidok Cheongnyeon Myeonryehoe (the Society of Christian Endeavor) that was a youth organization of the Presbyterian church during the Japanese colonial reign. The Gidok Cheongnyeon Myeonryehoe was an international youth group that was first organized in the United States in 1881 and spread all over the world. It was introduced to Korea by missionaries of the North Presbyterian Board in the 1900s and it was strengthened as a Presbyterian Youth Campaign in 1921.
A Christian Endeavor Campaign led by the Gidok Cheongnyeon Myeonryehoe first began as a purely religious movementits leader was missionary An Dae-Seon. The Choseon Yeonhaphoe (the Choson Coalition Association) was organized in 1924, and a new leader group participated in the campaign in 1928. From this time, it was developed into a social campaign as well as a religious campaign. And the Ke-dok program (“Clean Up Social Evil”) and the enlightenment of the farmers were undertaken by churches and society.
The Ke-dok program was developed under the slogan of “anti-alcohol, anti-tobacco and frugality”. It had not only an ethical and religious aspect but a dimension of economic campaign. The enlightenment of the farmers was developed to provide farmers with economic and farming knowledge, and to inspire them. It was intended to edify their belief through a Christian community, to improve their character, and to realize the Kingdom of Haven.
The Christian Endeavor Campaign could not solve fundamental problems that the Korean people faced under the rule of Japanese Imperialism by its method and logic. However, it was a large-scale youth campaign that was developed into a socio-religious movement.
