1. Introduction
Byeonsa is the film interpreter of silent movie in Chosun(before liberation of Korea). Byeonsa was been in Chosun, Japan etc. and the part of asian nation. He has a role to interpreter silent film and to assist audience's enjoying film. But the appearance of Byeonsa negatively influences to silent film in point of film aethetic. Because he explain film by speech not by image.
2. The Appearance of Byeonsa and It's Role
The Byeonsa of Chosun was from Japan. The Byeonsa of Japan was from the interpreter of traditional performance, Bunraku and Kabuki. The Dayu of Bunraku and the Dakemodo of Kabuki explanes the drama and processes it.
The period of the appearance of Byeonsa in Chosun was guessed in 1910's. He takes important position from assistant position of silent film according to his popular higher. At that time interpreter of silent film was divided two part, such as Jeonseol and Jungseol. Jonseol is to explain characters and story. Jngseol is main story of drama. The Role of Byeonsa is not only intrpreter of film but a performer who shows one-man show in the progress of interpreterinf silent film,
The technic style of Chosun's Byeonsa is diferent from Western type of the film interpreter. Chosun's Byeonsa has a few of special technics and form. This thesis is suggested these through Korean old scenario, 〈Arirang〉 and the performance of silent film 〈A Public Prosecutor and Woman teacher(검사와 여선생), 1984〉.
And this study tried to discuss the function of Byeonsa in the viewpoint of film narrative.
3. Conclusion
The popular star of silent film peoriod, Byeonsa is disappeared with the apperance of sound film. But it's influence was been strongly and deeply in the Chosun's film culture. Generaly we think that the appearance of it is negative point in silent film aethetic. But in the other viewpoint we think that the function of Byeonsa makes a environment for Korean to enjoy Korean traditional emotion through special performance.
