As the mobile phone has been multi-functioned recently, it is required for the mobile phone to have various control devices such as soft-keys and side-keys. Researchers have evaluated various types of physical user interface such as keypads while the designing appearances of the side-key control such as configuration, shape, and size of the side-key controller have been little investigated. This study aims to investigate the acceptable range of physical dimension of side-key control device. A total of ten mobile phones and sixteen participants were used in the evaluation experiment to identify the desirable location and the size of side-key control button in terms of user satisfaction. It is expected that the results of this study might be utilized to suggest a minimum requirement of designing the physical user interface of cellular phone’s side key.
