The last decade witnessed drastic increase of excavations of prehistoric sites, to the extent which new data accumulated by the excavations can seriously modify previous explanation about prehistoric culture of North and South Chungcheong Provinces. This paper firstly attempts to overview what the newly accumulated data are like and how they are represented in national history. Analyzing high school history textbook and a couple of popular introductory history books reveals that some prehistoric sites of Chungcheong Provinces seem to be unnecessarily overemphasized on the one hand, and some are not cited despite of their importance, on the other hand.
The portion of prehistory in presenting local history of Chungcheong Provinces is a little higher than in national history. However, it is relatively quite low in comparison to Baekje Kingdom’s that has been mainly focused in explaining Chungcheong Provinces’ past. Considering educating and/or publicizing local history has been developed by support of local self-governments emphasizing their regions’ own characteristics, it is necessary to increase the space given to prehistory for overcome limitation of capital-oriented perspectives. Thus, it is expected that the part of prehistory will be enriched in educating and publicizing Chungcheng Provinces’ history
Enriching education and publication of prehistory will be successful seems to need overcoming three-supremacist’s approach in which only something first, oldest, and best is highlighted, and regionalism, and also developing new agenda for explaining prehistoric society and culture.
