The purpose of this paper is to trace how differently the knights are portrayed between the romances written in the twelfth century and in the fourteenth century and how closely the different images and the social situations are related. The knights in The Song of Roland and Yvain are described more idealistically than those in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Le Morte D’Arthur. This can be explained by the historical assumption that in the earlier period the knights were more dependent on the social system and so these romances played a role of encouraging them to emulate the idealized knights. This tendency, however, changes in the later romances. Comparing social and political situations with the chivalric images of the early and later romances reveals that those changed images are actually the result of the changed social situations and of the changed relation between the knights and the social structure.
