The medieval romances can be roughly defined as the quest of the knight who rides forth to seek adventure. They have the marvellous adventures of a chivalrous and heroci knight. The knight goes on a quest, fighting and defeating monsters and giants. However, the courtly love has only secondary function. Women's images are also described as typical and conventional supporting role. They are silent, powerless and even decorative in the most of romances. The images follow tradition imposed by a male-dominated society. But,in The Wife of Bath's Tale and Lanval, the heroines take part in voicing their disapproval of that tradition. They want the plot of romances to be led by themselves.
