Carnie and Barss (2003) contends that Chomsky's (2001) definition of phase is not compatible with the Mapping Principle of Diesing (1992). Phase such as vP or CP conflicts with Diesing's (1992) style of tree-mapping analysis. For example, if a definite NP remains within the VP, it will be bound by existential closure and then leads to a violation of the Mapping Principle. In this way, Carnie and Barss propose that the definition of phase should be relativized to each argument, dispensing with Chomsky's definition of phase.
This paper has shown that the necessity of getting rid of Chomsky's definition of phase does not actually arise, as opposed to Carnie and Barss' claim. By adopting Miyagawa's (2006) Interpretation Economy, the phase theory of Chomsky should enable a definite NP to raise to the phase edge inasmuch as it has an effect on interpretation. It leads the definite NP to escape the nuclear scope, ending up not posing a problem with Mapping Principle.
Therefore, Carnie and Barss' relativized phasing is not corroborated on both the empirical and the conceptual ground.
