This paper presents a novel analysis of word-order patterns in the History of English in terms of which the word orders of OE and ME are analysed as phase in minimalist accounts. With the assumptions that verbs undergo movements to build up the phases in the syntax, we proposed that Old English (OE) word order was derived within one phase (CP-VP) whereas Present English (PE) word order within two phases (CP-TP, vP-VP). Thus it is said that the word order patterns in the history of English pace with the notion that a monadic phase (CP-VP) has been branched into dyadic phases (CP-TP, vP-VP). In the Middle English where a monadic phase was being changed to dyadic phases, the speakers were confused about which phases should be accepted. Thus three different verb positions with the same meaning were shown at that time
