The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of long-term training on the physical fitness in master athletes. The subject of the study was comprised of 29 elderly master athletes aged between 80 to 89. The 70% and 50% a region of femoral cross-sectional area(CSA) measurements were determined with an MRI machine. Also the isokinetic strength maximal oxygen uptake(VO2max), bone mineral density and fitness level were measured in all elderly group(master athletes group: 17 men, untrained elderly subjects: 12 men). The isokinetic strength for both foot extension and flexion in the master athletes was higher than that of untrained elderly subjects, especially at a slow speed level(60 deg/sec). There were no significant differences in the femoral CSA measured by magnetic resonance imaging between the elderly master athletes and untrained elderly subjects. VO2max in the elderly master athletes was higher to the values in controls from 80 to 89 years of age. The master athletes had higher bone mineral density of the lumber and trochanter major than the untrained elderly subjects. The elderly master athletes recorded a high score for the fitness test, especially in 10 meter obstacle walking, 6 minutes walking and sit-ups test. These results suggest that the elderly master athletes have excellent physical fitness and that physical training prevents 1) loss of the number of motor unit, 2) decreased VO2max, and 3) decline of bone mineral density with aging even in subjects over 80 years of age.
