This paper is an attempt at an application of Fairclough's three-dimensional critical discourse analysis methodology in analyzing a political speech given by former South Korean President Roh Moohyun to identify his identity represented in the text. The analysis proceeds in three stages, first, microscopic analysis of the speech itself using Halliday's functional grammar with the emphasis on appraisal system, second, interpretation of discourse practices surrounding the text, and finally, explanation of the social processes underlying the text and discourse practices. Based on this analysis, it is claimed that former President Roh created a hydrid text by inserting into the text (or by recontextualizing) discourses of the socially oppressed and margainized, of prviate talks and of confrontational partisan speeches. These discourse practices are then linked to Roh's alledged confrontational and emotionally unstable character and inferior complex traced back to his background in poverty and social struggle as a way of explaining how his discourse reflects his unique social identity and personality.
