Kang, Sang Gyu, a senior student in Gyung-gi middle school in 1941, was arrested for subversive behavior. This article looked into Kang's life as a student until he got arrested by Japanese police, The most impressive thing about his life is that exemplariness (conformity) and subversiveness (resistance) coexisted, He was known as a brilliant, exemplary student to others that even Japanese teachers thought of him as a trustworthy student. Contrarily from what he was known for, deep down in his mind, he harshly criticized the Government-General of Chosen, and the policy to combine Japan and Chosun together, yearned the independence of Chosun.
His ambivalent behavior induced from his family's and his own desire to become successful in life, In order to succeed in his life, born as a farmer's son in colonized Chosun, he had to have a good academic background. Due to his desire to thrive in his life by doing well in school, he had to become a paragon of others which caused him to suppress and procrastinate his subversive thoughts and actions. Nevertheless, nation meant so much to him that it was a foundation of his existence and the basic units of his living. His journal explicitly shows unstable life of people in Chosun of the time, their conventional and familiar life style being disturbed. Kang was not the only one to notice and be alert to this disturbance, but also many of his peers who were sensitive would be able to feel this too. Therefore, they didn't reveal the subversive behavior of Kang.
Kang was not the one to end his life of ambivalence. It was the colonial force control over Chosun of the colonial period which intrude into people's everyday life. He was incarcerated for two years and the prison keeper acclaimed that Kang was a good incarcerator. Was the colonial force able to make him be under discipline? His leftist movement after the liberation indicates that was not the case.
