Korean society is negative in acceptance of immigration from foreign countries, and is also said be a closed one. But a great deal of Koreans has immigrated to foreign countries such as China, Russia and central Asia. They generally have been getting to assimilate to their host societies. But the assimilation always is not the same. I would like to describe interactive relationships between immigraion and h acculturation that are seen in th Korean immigrants societies in Eastern Asia.
According to Emmanuel Todd, it is indicated that th destiny of immigrants is determined by the interaction between th host society and the identity of immigrants in multi-ethnic or mono-ethnic countries. Naturalization to the host society and intermarriages with other ethnic groups ate th symbolic indicators of their destiny. Especially, the race, nationality, religion and identity etc. are sometimes related to intermarriages.
Since there were no history and system of racial discrimination in Russia, intermarriages are very common even in the rural areas. Although the 1st generation of Korean-Russians shows somewhat negative feelings to Russians, the intermarriages of 2nd and 3rd generations of Koreas-Russians with Russians are increasing. The reason of increasing intermarriages between Korean-Russians and Russians is mainy due to the difficulties of finding a spouse from ethnic Koreas after the World War Ⅱ.
In addition, it will also be useful to compare the cases Korean-Chinese with the Koreas in Japan. There are some differences between them The tendency of assimilation of the Koreans in Japan to the host society is more remarkable than that of Korean-Russians or that of Korean-Chinese. But the intermarriage-ratio of the Koreas in Japan is rather low.
Therefore, I argue that the ethnic identity is not always related to intermarriage. In other words, these two are different. It is claimed that the ethnic identity should be discussed without ignoring the relationship with culture. On the other hand, the culture of their motherland is not always overt on immigrants. Sometimes it is covert, and sometimes they tend to make a display of their native culture.
Culture changes and develops itself continuously. And it can be said that culture is influenced by the ethnic identity.
