This paper reexamines the monosyllabicity and avoidance of a word-final consonant sequence in English hypocoristics that were proposed by Lappe (2002). English hypocoristics can be divided into two types, depending on the number of syllables. The survey results from five north Americans show that bisyllabic forms with the suffix /i/ are more widely accepted even though monosyllabic words comprise the biggest part of the English lexicon. The results also show that a hypocoristic needs to be maximally correspondent to its base form and thus involves a consonant cluster in a word-final position unless it violates a phonological constraint. Consequently, a monosyllabic hypocoristic with a consonant cluster is considered the typical structural model of English hypocoristics. With regard to hypocoristics with two outputs, this paper proposes that a certain phonological constraint is inactive and ranked low for some speakers, while it is active for others and ranked high. This different constraint hierarchies for truncated outputs are natural in a sense that truncation itself in nature shows conflicting properties, and thus, a truncated form needs to be correspondent to its base word but may be phonologically irregular at the same time.
