The purpose of this paper is to find out if there is any durational difference or similarity between bi-consonantal clusters in the onset and those in the coda through a phonetic experiment measuring consonant duration. The results of the experiment shows that the bi-consonantal clusters in the onset are much like a singleton consonant in terms of duration unlike those in the coda, which are as long as two consonants. This durational difference is attributed to the difference of segmental slots available to the onset and the coda. That is, only one segmental slot is allowed for the onset while more than one slot is allowed for the coda. Thus, consonants should be compressed to fit in when they occur in the onset clusters.
