This study investigates the iambic pentameter of English poetry to understand how a poet solves a conflict arising from the mismatches between the iambic metrical pattern and the stress patterns of words. In the framework of Optimality Theory, this study proposes that the hierarchically ranked constraints evaluate possible matches between the metrical pattern and the stress pattern. In this paper, eight markedness constraints are suggested: * W ⇒Lexical stress, *Monosyllable Peak ⇒ W, Adjacency(PhP), Adjacency(CG), Peak] ₁<SUB>≥D</SUB>, <SUB>Line</SUB>[W, W≤S and ₁[W. These constraints interact with one another in the ranking <SUB>Line</SUB>[W, PeaK] ₁<SUB>≥D</SUB> ≫ *W ⇒ Lexical stress ≫ W ≤ S, ₁[W, Adjacency (CG), Adjacency(PhP) ≫ *MP to select the well-formed match between the stress patterns of given words and the metrical pattern in the iambic pentameter as an optimal output.
