From a Sociocultural Theory perspective, this case study illustrates the dynamics of silence in a situation of triadic collaborative group work. In this paper, silence is conceptualized not as a passive state or non-existence of language but as an active manifestation of agency which is the result of the interplay between one's sociocultural history and present contexts. The analyses of the data obtained from 1) the core participant's journal, 2) transcripts from audio-recorded dialogues between the core participant and two non-core participants, and 3) follow-up stimulated-recall tasks indicate that the issue of silence in group work should not always be considered counterproductive or an undesirable anxiety to be removed. Instead, in certain circumstances, silence may function as a mediator of learning.
