This study deals with the labio-velar onglide /w/ in the context of English kwV sequences which has a tendency to be frequently deleted by Korean speakers of English. Three different production patterns of English kwV sequences were identified based on acoustic evidence; complete deletion of /w/, partial pronunciation of /w/, and the target-appropriate production of /w/. Three different patterns are analyzed within the framework of Optimality Theory. The markedness constraint Complex, which prohibits complex segments, plays an important role in whether /w/ is dropped. Specifically, complete deletion occurs when the constraints Complex and no Multiple Correspondence are undominated. Partial production of /w/ occurs when *Complex and the faithfulness constraint that maximizes the labial feature are undominated. The target-appropriate form is achieved by demoting the high-ranked constraints.
