This paper is an attempt to provide an analysis of the tough construction in the framework of Minimalist Program, specifically in the feature-checking theory of Chomsky (1998, 1999). It is proposed that the head of the clausal argument have the φ-feature and the Case feature to account for the feature checking in constructions in which the expletive it or the infinitival complement of an adjective occurs as the subject of the main clause. The construction in which the empty operator is moved into the Spec of the CP complement of an adjective is accounted for by assuming that the head of the CP complement has the feature [pred] which creates a predicate from a proposition and that the empty operator has the feature [var] which requires it to be identified. In addition, a possible analysis is proposed which can account for the fact that the subject of the tough construction cannot correspond to the subject of the infinitival clause and the fact that the experiencer of an adjective and the overt subject of the infinitival clause cannot occur together in the construction in which the empty operator is moved into the Spec of the CP complement of the adjective.
