Different from the theories of poetry or drama, that of the novel is on the move all the time. In case of the studies of the Russian Novel and its origin it is much more complicated. So far such prominent specialists as Richard Freeborn, John Garrard, Ivo Pospl?il and David Gasperetti to name a few of them have published their own versions about the rise of the Russian novel.
Controversy over the rise of Russian novel is still ongoing, especially over the period. whether it is to be the 18th century (Chulkov, Emin, Komarov) or Aleksandr Pushkin, the author of Eugene Onegin. It goes without saying that the application of Bakhtin's theory of novel has accelerated hottest discussions of this topic. Gasperetti, for example, dedicated himself to writing a single book, in which he insists on the importance of the 18th century, not only as the beginning of the Russian novel. but also the rise of the novels as the carnival. stylization, and mockery of the West.
In this paper, however, we are trying to reexamine Pushkin's Eugene Onegin and its place in the history of the Russian novel as a whole. The importance of this 'Novel in poetry,' we discuss, is not whether it is the very beginning of Russian novel or not, but rather, we believe, the role of the novel as the foremost model of Bakhtin's theory, which in return made it possible to reexamine the history of the Russian novel as a whole including the issue of its origin.
We examine the concept of the genre 'Roman v stikhakh' of Eugene Onegin. Author-Hero Relationship in the novel. and finally, the voices of the era as revived all through the novel. All these elements add up to the fact that this novel must have played a vital role to the birth of Bakhtin's theory. What is more important. however. is that the birth of the theory played a key role to rediscover the 18th century Russian novel and reconsider the meaning of the novel itself. All this process well shows us not only the greatness of Pushkin's masterpiece. but also the role of criticism or novel theory as the source of vitality for the development of the novel in general.
