This paper has its aim to clarify the defect characteristics of masonry buildings in modern age of Korea. This research was performed through the repair reports of modern cultural heritages from 1986 to 2006. The 126 repair reports of 70 modern architectural properties have been prepared until December 2006 in Korea, they are no more than 1.4 percent of whole cultural heritages. These 70 modern architectural properties are classified with 22 cases for timber, 36 cases for masonry, 5 cases for (reinforced) concrete, and 7 cases for others by structure. Masonry structures rare most of them. In the result that we looked into the defect parts of masonry buildings, sprawling many of modern architectural properties by structure, we could achieve conclusion like below.
Firstly, the defects on foundations have been represented with the crack of cement mortar in basement, the structural fragility and corrosion of timber floor. The corrosions on the floor are caused by moisture from the bottom. Most of cases proves to be defective in joints between timber structure and brickwork.
Secondly, the most of defects are occurring on the wall, they have been represented with cracks by leaking from the wall, the damaged and collapsed by brickwork, the joint cracks, the discoloration of plastering and painting, the broken windows and doors. Defects of brickwork are substantially due to leaking from the wall.
Thirdly, the roof has many defects after the wall, they have been also represented with corrosions by leaking from the roof, the corrosion and damaged by members and tiles of roof, and broken gutter. In case of the roof, defects occur to arise from leaking by damage of roof material such as tile, sheet zinc, and slate.
